A native of Garland, Texas, Justin began playing trumpet in 2002 and first studied with Forest Yenne. In May of 2011, he received his Bachelor's degree in Music Performance with a minor in Mathematics from Southern Methodist University (SMU) in Dallas. While at SMU, Justin primarily studied with Tom Booth of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra and jazz trumpeter Akira Sato. He also served as an undergraduate teaching assistant for the music department as well as the math department during his time at SMU.
After graduating from SMU, Justin taught private trumpet lessons throughout the DFW metroplex, including in Dallas, Garland, Rockwall, Richardson, Plano, McKinney, and Rowlett. As a freelance musician, he also enjoyed playing all styles of music with various jazz combos, big bands, brass quintets, and original groups. One such group, Lazy Summer, consisted of ukulele, trumpet, and bass. Lazy Summer received nominations and awards for best new artist and best jazz artist in the Fort Worth Weekly 2014 Music Awards. Additionally, Justin was principal trumpet with the New Texas Symphony Orchestra from 2013 to 2015, and he played 3rd trumpet with the Brazos Valley Symphony Orchestra from 2013 to 2017.
In 2015, Justin began his graduate studies at Oklahoma State University, where he served as the Graduate Assistant to Dr. Ryan Gardner. In March of 2016, he was the winner of the 2016 Graduate Solo Division of the National Trumpet Competition. Most recently, Justin accepted a position with the United States Air Force Heritage of America Band at Langley Air Force Base.
Justin has participated in the Sewanee Summer Music Festival (2010), the Rafael Mendez Brass Institute (2010), and the Texas Music Festival (2014). He has additionally studied with Dr. Jason Bergman, Ryan Anthony, Allan Dean, Russ DeVuyst, Mark Hughes, and David Hickman. For a complete resume, simply email Justin here.
